Wish you had a local bestie to help you plan your Hawai'i elopement?

Aloha,

I'm a mom and former teacher who picked up a camera three years ago and haven't looked back since. Now, as an elopement photographer for all Hawaiian islands, I help couples create and plan elopement adventures in Hawai'i where the ocean sets the rhythm. Born-and-raised on O'ahu, but available on all other islands, I'm here to bring you along to you to some of my favorite places on every island.

I. Choose your location

The state of Hawai'i is made up of eight different islands, but only four of them are really worth eloping in. The other islands are either inaccessible or don't have much to do there. Many couples will elope on one island, then visit another since it's only about a 30 minute flight between islands. Let me break it down for you from a local's point of view.

  • Kaua'i - great for adventurous hikers and stunning mountain views
  • O'ahu - the best of both for variety of activities, hikes, and sight seeing
  • Hawai'i Island (aka Big Island) - best volcanoes, waterfalls, and manta rays
  • Maui - beautiful resorts, great for relaxation and sight seeing

Eloping on Kaua'i

Eloping on Kaua'i

PROS:

BEST THINGS TO DO:

If you love everything outdoors and want an adventure. This is the island for you.

Na Pali Coast Boat Tour - the best way to see the amazing mountain views only Kaua'i has to offer.

Wailua River State Park - take a boat up this lush river valley takes you to the Fern Grotto which is an unusual cave covered in ferns.

Waimea Canyon - take a scenic drive or hike in Hawai'i's largest and most famous canyon

Mountain Tubing - float down open canals and tunnels through the mountain side in Lihue

FAVORITE ELOPEMENT LOCATION:

I'm a sucker for mountains, ocean and sunset views so it would have to be Tunnels Beach.

The Island of Kaua'i

Kaua'i is the perfect island for a big adventures and a slower pace. It's a little smaller than O'ahu and more rugged and home to some of Hawai'i's most dramatic landscapes. From towering sea cliffs and hidden beaches to lush valleys and winding jungle trails, Kauaʻi feels wild, untouched, and deeply connected to nature.
  • Known for it's hiking
  • Lush green mountains and tropical greenery
  • Ocean adventures
  • Laid back atmosphere

CONS:

  • Traveling can be tricky because there is no main road that goes all the way across or around the whole island

Eloping on O'ahu

Eloping on O'ahu

PROS:

BEST THINGS TO DO:

I always tell my couples it's worth renting a car even if it's just for a couple days to drive around the whole island. There is something here for everyone no matter what your vibe is. If you want to chill on the beach or go for a hike with stunning views, you won't be able to do it all here in just one week.

Hanauma Bay - you can only purchase tickets 2 days in advance beginning at 7am HST.
It helps if you have two people trying to book at once because these sell out almost immediately.

Kualoa Ranch - you'll want to buy tickets 2-3 months in advance because these also sell out early

Pearl Harbor - it's technically free to visit, but to see the Arizona Memorial you'll need to get tickets ahead of time. Early start times are recommended because the parking lot fills up.

Aloha Stadium Swap Meet - the largest open air market in the state. Everything from clothing, home decor and food. Tons of non-touristy souvenirs to take home.

FAVORITE ELOPEMENT LOCATION:

It's so hard to choose! But, if you're making me pick just one it would be Kualoa Regional Park !

The Island of O'ahu

O'ahu is my home island where I was so blessed to be born-and-raised.  You'll find the most variety in locations and things to do here. It has the most affordable hotels of all the islands, lots of shopping and it's central to everything. I always tell my couples it's worth renting a car even if it's just for a couple days to drive around the whole island. There is something here for everyone no matter what your vibe is.
  • Best mix of outdoor activities, shopping & nightlife
  • Easy to travel - Less than two hour drive from one side of the island to the other
  • Lots of location variety for elopements that are easy to access
  • Great hikes for beginners and pros

CONS:

  • Most populated of the Hawaiian islands

PROS:

BEST THINGS TO DO:

If you want an off the grid adventure, Hawai'i Island is for you! It's one of the few places I've felt a true connection to nature away from the crowds in such jaw-dropping locations.

Wai'ale Falls - Although you can't get a permit to elope here, it's my favorite waterfall I've been to of all the islands. It's accessible by just a short hike (although it can be muddy and slippery) and has a large swimming area. There's a fun spot to cliff jump too!

Punalu'u Black Sand Beach - one of the most famous black sand beaches often frequented by honu (turtles) and it's on the way to the Volcanoes National Park.

Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park - one of two national parks in the state and home to the most active volcano Kīlauea. Timing can be a bit tricky to actually see an eruption in person but if you're lucky enough, keep an eye on news and the park webcams to see the fire goddess Pele dance.

Manta Ray Experience - the only place in the United States where you can actually snorkel with Manta Ray. When I went, they swam right up to us, it was literal magic. Just be prepared for cold water since the best time to see them is at night. And don't forget to take Dramamine if you get sea sick!

FAVORITE ELOPEMENT LOCATION:

Kulaniapia Falls is hands down the best waterfall location on all the Hawaiian islands. It's located on private property and requires a $750 venue fee for two hours plus additional fees for guests. This includes access to a covered pavilion and other areas on site.

The Island of Hawai'i

The Big Island was given its name for the obvious reason - it's the largest and oldest of the Hawaiian islands. It is home to Hawai'i's most active volcano and the most rustic.

  • Stunning waterfalls
  • Active volcanoes
  • Vast, rustic land
  • Black Sand Beaches

CONS:

  • Everything is far from each other so it can be tough to plan an itinerary to visit lots of different places. For example, the drive from Kailua-Kona to the Volcanoes National park is about 2 hours

PROS:

BEST THINGS TO DO:

If you want an adventure, combined with natural beauty, convenience and comfort then Maui is for you. I usually come here for a quick getaway with my husband when we want some time to reconnect and relax.

Haleakalā National Park – Watching the sunrise from the summit of Haleakalā is one of the most unforgettable experiences in Hawaiʻi. Sitting above the clouds at over 10,000 feet, there's so much to see in every direction. If early mornings aren't your thing, sunset is just as beautiful and often much less crowded.

Road to Hāna – One of Maui's most iconic adventures, the Road to Hāna is packed with waterfalls, bamboo forests, black sand beaches, and scenic ocean views. The journey is just as much the destination as the stops along the way, so plan for a full day and take your time exploring.

Molokini Crater – This partially submerged volcanic crater is one of the best snorkeling destinations in Hawaiʻi. The crystal-clear water offers incredible visibility, and it's common to see colorful tropical fish, coral reefs, and occasionally sea turtles.

Whale Watching (December–April) – Maui is one of the best places in the world to see humpback whales. During the winter months, thousands migrate to Hawaiian waters to breed and give birth. Seeing these massive creatures breach is something you'll never forget.

FAVORITE ELOPEMENT LOCATION:

Mokapu Beach - So hard to pick! But, since Maui has some of the best sunsets of all the Hawaiian islands this is it. Plus, it's less crowded and has lots of parking nearby.

The Island of Maui

Maui nō ka ʻoi is a saying in Hawaiian that locals say which means Maui is the best. And for a good reason. It's perfect for couples who want both adventure and convenience.
  • West Maui sunsets
  • Diverse landscapes, from waterfalls to volcanoes
  • Luxury resorts, restaurants, and activities

CONS:

  • Some areas can still be a bit touristy and crowded

III. Book your vendors

In general, Air BNBs are a great option because parking is free and you can get away from the crowded resorts. Many hotels charge up to $75 per day just for parking. Just beware of scams and book through a reputable site.

O'ahu
  • Waikiki – The main hotel hub on O'ahu. It's busy and touristy, but you'll find the widest variety of accommodations, restaurants, and shopping, along with some of the island's more affordable hotel options. It's also a great central location for exploring the rest of the island. I actually live right outside the heart of Waikiki!
  • Ko Olina – A resort area fronting large lagoons with calm waters on the west side of O'ahu. It's quieter than Waikiki and home to several luxury resorts, making it a great option if you're looking for a more relaxed vacation atmosphere.
  • North Shore – If you're looking for a laid-back vibe or a beachfront Airbnb, this is it. You'll find world-famous surf breaks, small beach towns, food trucks, and a slower pace of life that feels completely different from Waikiki.

Kaua'i
  • Hanalei / North Shore – Typically where I stay when I visit (it's close to my favorite elopement location, Tunnels Beach). This area is known for its dramatic mountain views, lush landscapes, and some of the most beautiful beaches in Hawai'i. If you're looking for that classic tropical Kaua'i feel, this is it.
  • Po'ipu – A resort area fronting Shipwreck Beach on the sunnier south shore of the island. You'll find plenty of resorts, restaurants, and beautiful beaches, making it one of the most popular places to stay on Kaua'i.
  • East Shore – Known as the Coconut Coast, you'll find lots of hotel options in areas like Nawiliwili and Wailua. It's centrally located, closer to the airport, and makes a great home base if you plan on exploring both the north and south shores during your trip.

Maui
  • South Maui (Wailea/Kihei) – A popular resort area with plenty of hotel options, It's a great choice if you're looking for convenience and a more upscale feel.
  • West Maui (Ka'anapali/Napili/Kapalua) Laid back resort town typically where I stay when I visit. Can't beat the beaches and sunsets.
  • Central Maui (Kahului/Wailuku) – Located near the airport, this area is a practical home base if you plan on exploring different parts of the island.
  • East Maui (Hana) – Perfect for couples looking for a slower pace and a more off-the-grid experience. Staying in Hana allows you to fully experience the waterfalls, lush rainforest, and black sand beaches.

Hawai'i Island
  • Kona Coast – Typically where I stay when I visit. You'll find plenty of resorts, sunny weather year-round, beautiful beaches, and easy access to experiences like snorkeling with manta rays. It's also a great home base for exploring the west side of the island.
  • Kohala Coast – Home to many of the island's luxury resorts and some of Hawaiʻi's most beautiful white sand beaches. This area tends to be quieter and more relaxed, with stunning sunsets and easy access to places like Hapuna Beach and Waialea Bay.
  • Volcano Village – If you want a more unique, off-the-grid experience, this is it. Located just outside Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park, you'll be surrounded by lush rainforest and close to some of the island's most incredible hiking and volcanic landscapes.
  • Hilo – The lush, tropical side of the island. This is where all the waterfalls are. You'll also find botanical gardens, and a slower pace than Kona. It's a great option if you plan on exploring places like Akaka Falls, Wai'ale Falls (my favorite!), and the Hamakua Coast.

How I show up as your Hawaii elopement  photographer

What truly sets her apart is her ability to see people — to really capture emotion, connection, and love in every single frame. She didn’t just take beautiful photos of us; she somehow managed to capture the essence of our relationship. Every glance, every smile, every laugh — it all felt so natural and real, and that’s entirely because of the calm, confident, and intuitive way she guided us through the session. Thank you, Erin, for capturing our love so beautifully. We’ll cherish these photos forever.

Sweet Words...

She’s not only incredibly talented and professional, but also so fun and easygoing, which made us (a shy couple) feel very comfortable throughout the day Erin guided us with poses, checked in to make sure we loved everything, and created such a fun and enjoyable experience. It started to rain, but she was able to work through it and we had a beautiful rainbow! The photos turned out absolutely stunning, and we were amazed at how quickly we received them! We can’t recommend Erin enough if you’re visiting Oahu. It was a wonderful experience we’ll always cherish. Thank you so much, Erin!
